Yet one bullish analyst says Citigroup's piecemeal value is almost double Friday's panic-induced $33.10. And Citi's principal shareholder, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, dismisses breakup talk along with investor fears that a new CEO would have trouble steering Citi's bulk. Citi's diversity and size will help it overcome the current storm, he says. Barron's says Citigroup is a "bargain." Shares could hit 60 in a few years.

Some good tips here on how to make better use of Google Finance. I'm still a Yahoo Finance user because I subscribe to the real-time quotes service, but if I ever cancel in favor of the quotes from TD Ameritrade, I could see myself relying more on Google Finance.

I should make better use of #6 "Sector Summary" and I was not aware of the multiple quote feature in # 11.

Reuters is planning to launch its own version of MySpace this year - though its community website will not be aimed at teenagers. Instead, fund managers, traders and analysts are being targeted.
Reuters hopes to draw from the 70,000 subscribers of its messaging service as a starting point for its foray into the fast-growing sector of community websites.
"You will see us, later in the year, launch a version of MySpace for the financial services community," said the chief executive, Tom Glocer. "It won't have the latest hot videos and the 'why I am into Metallica and the Arctic Monkeys' blogs. Instead we are going to give our financial services users the ability to post their research or if they are traders, their trading models."
The website will also be exclusive to Reuters subscribers. "People don't want to have 100 friend requests from teenage girls in Florida if they are trading the credit derivatives market, but they probably are interested in being able to share research," said Mr Glocer.
Reuters has been quick to embrace online potential. Last year it posted one of its journalists to Second Life, where he reports on events within the virtual world. The company has sold advertising on the billboards outside its virtual headquarters within Second Life. "I would still put this strongly in the realm of experimentation but it's a nice controlled experiment that has probably paid for itself 10 times over in marketing," he said.
Reuters reported yesterday an 8% decline in annual trading profits - to £308m - as it invested in its business. Revenues were £2.56bn, up 4.8% on an underlying basis. Reuters said revenues would increase at least 6% this year.

This has some merit for a group of people looking to share information on stocks they are following. For instance, if there were a Recommended List of list stocks, the group could share the symbols on a shared Google spreadsheet, the recommended date/price, and then Google Finance update the list on a regular basis and track the performance of the list. I hope to play with this a little bit more when I get some time.

Online Brokerage Account 'Incursions' Worry SEC

WASHINGTON (Reuters)—High-tech crooks are hijacking online brokerage accounts using spy-ware and operating from remote locations, sometimes in Eastern Europe, a senior U.S. market regulator said on Friday.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sees these computer "incursions" as a growing problem, said Walter Ricciardi, deputy enforcement director at the SEC.
"It's something we're very concerned about," he said in remarks at a legal conference in Washington.
About 25 percent of U.S. retail stock trades are made by online investors through roughly 10 million online accounts, according to brokerages regulator NASD.
Incursion crooks load a victim's or a public computer with a program to monitor the user's activities and capture vital information, such as account numbers and passwords. The program then e-mails the stolen information back to the thief who can use it to open victims' accounts.
Once inside, the thief may sell off an account's portfolio and take the proceeds. Or accounts hijacked in incursions may be used for "pump-and-dump" schemes to buy and sell manipulated stocks for profit, Ricciardi said.
Public computers, such as those in Internet cafes or hotel rooms, are especially vulnerable to incursions, he said.
The SEC is tracking down those perpetrating incursions and trying to educate online investors to be careful, he said.

A Monthly Routine - As Suggested by The Kirk Report Blog

This idea of doing a monthly review of High Volume Gainers is a great idea - and I am going to add the reminder to my calendar starting now!
I was just looking at some charts and saying to myself: "How come I am not finding candidate stocks for huge Gap Up moves in the charts I am scanning?" I'd even be happy to see them after the initial move, as many times a large Gap Up is followed by a nice sustained upward move over a longer period. I need to stop thinking that I missed the +2-3 point move - when I look later and see 20-30 points I wind up kicking myself. Maybe that is the problem, I need to stop dwelling on the ones I miss and work harder at finding the next batch of movers.

Interesting discussion thread on E-trade's trailing stops going off on bad quotes and not on actual trades at those prices.

An extract of the text in case you need to sign up for the group to read the posts:

I have been in discussion with E*trade regarding their implementation of
“Trailing stops”. Needless to say we are in disagreement. Seems simple to me
my position as you will read below is that Trailing stops should not be
executed by an erroneous bid. In this case, the trailing stop was more than
$2 below the currently trading prices. I had 2 failures in 3 days. Below is
my last email to E*trade.

This is the second failure of the trailing stop order in 3 trading days. I
have now lost total confidence that trailing stop orders are working
correctly. I, unfortunately, do not have access to all the history of the
bid/ask. It is obviously not working off the ”Best” bid/ask or it would not
have executed a trade that had a trailing stop in the 26.60 area and then
sold for 28.50. There is no way this trade should have been executed. I don’
t believe with a clear consciences tell me this is right.

If you trailing stop really works this way then it is useless to serious
traders.

This has now happened twice at market open. We all know that the bid/ask is
spread out during non-market hours and are not realistic. This should not
cause the trade to execute. Somewhere in the system there is a problem that
is causing trades to be trigger when no trading has actually taken place at
that price.

I understand the system is based off the bid/ask and you hold the orders in
your system and convert them to market order based off the bid/ask. Somehow
you have to be able to determine if the bid/ask is really valid. The way you
system is now any exchange that is late adjusting its overnight bid/ask will
cause trades to be triggered and that is not right. Even worse is it opens
your customers up to those that would take advantage by knowing they can
trigger orders just by putting in a bogus bid. Talk about being a setting
duck. Perhaps, you should trigger the trailing stops off the time & sales
and an actual trade.

Trailing stops should work no different than hard stops. The only difference
being who holds the orders not what causes the order to execute. Perhaps,
you need to change the trailing stop to trigger off an actual trade the way
normal stops do on the NYSE.

I was looking forward to some of E-Trade's features when they finish their merger with TD Waterhouse... now I am not so sure...

This is a potential growth area for the gaming equipment makers. Perhaps IGT or some of the others. Although the article says the devices were developed by Cantor Fitzgerald for bond trading, I don't think they will be the manufacturers or distributors of the devices. Also, I give it a few months before some kind of a hacking incident is discussed around this system.

Top % gainer on AMEX today I think.

I am glad I have been patient with this and that I bought more when I had the chance. Although, I am still mad at myself for not having the discipline I needed to keep myself out of this kind of a mess in the first place.

I may take some profits off the table on the partial position I have in the high 2's.

I just tried this out. If you are a FireFox user, and view stock charts from the online services like stockcharts.com, yahoo finance, or bigcharts, you may find this useful. It opens the chart for the symbol in a new browser tab when you highlight a bunch of symbols. I opened a text file of the IBD 100 symbols to test it out with. I think I will find it useful.

2:58PM Gerdau -- New High Profile (GGB) 18.70 -0.01: Steel stocks are up again today. A name in the group that has underperformed is Gerdau, the largest steel producer in Brazil, which is near a new 52-week high. Most in the US have not heard of them, but this is a $5.6 bln market cap company. Some foreign steel stocks have been bid higher (PKX and SIM to name a couple), but Gerdau has underperformed. The co recently reported Q4 profit up 63% yoy... An interesting kicker is the co's exposure to iron ore. The co said, according to Reuters, that it planned to start tapping one of three Brazilian iron ore deposits it owned in 2006, which holds some 500 mln tons of iron ore. Any regular reader of InPlay knows we have been covering the surge in iron ore prices (RIO recently got a 71% price increase with Nippon Steel). Perhaps GGB can save a "ton" of money by mining their own mines. Also, the stock has done little. Most names have surged, but GGB is up a measly 12% since mid-August. Last month, we profiled fellow Brazilian steelmaker, Comp Siderurgica (SID 25.86 +0.25) on this page at $20.32 for a 27% move in one month. Also, Mexican steel producer Grupo Simec (SIM 7.60 -0.02) is up 79% from our November profile. Mkt cap $5.6 bln, float 133 mln, avg vol 519K.

What's New in TeleChart: Worden Brothers, Inc.

I have been meaning to get around to downloading this beta and trying it out. It is now released and all TC2000 users will need to move to this in late March. I downloaded it and will be trying it out this weekend. Looks great! I like the ability to use it on 2 computers and the 2 monitor support looks like something I will have to try. Just what I needed, a reason to dump that bulky CRT on my desk for a new LCD monitor! I am pretty sure my laptop can support the dual monitors.

Diasppointing downward move for a pretty decent earnings report. I think this is over done and that it will recover within a few days to a few weeks. I still have a good % gain on this one, so I am going to be patient and see what happens in the near future. FWIW, I was away from the screen when this went down this AM, but I tried to pick up some more around 11.50 mark, but it had already started to recover some by then. Live and learn!

3 Year chart of Exxon Mobil XOM as it breaks out currently to new 52 week highs. I have been in this stock since my monthly $100 Dollar Cost Averaging purchases when I used a broker at Edward Jones. I decided to take a look back and I see that I purchased by first 2+ shares at 38.44 back in Feb, 2002. I stopped the DCA in Feb or March of 2004 when I moved by account to my online TD Waterhouse to more aggressively manage (trade) it. I only have 68 shares of this, but it is nice to see a nice steady gainer in my holdings. I almost sold out recently when it had trouble holding 50. For now, glad I am still in it.

Few Wall Street adages are more difficult to heed than "run with your winners." The temptation for many investors is to sell their top-performing stocks quickly to lock in gains, while hanging on to sagging shares in hopes they'll bounce back.

Pros advise just the opposite, urging investors to sell losers quickly and without remorse, while holding on to or even adding to winning positions.

POISED FOR MORE OF THE SAME?

About half of these top performers of 2004 still have reasonable PEG ratios.

A good place to look for the most promising stocks for 2005, then, might be among the biggest gainers of 2004. We recently screened through 8,000 companies for just such winners. Our prerequisites were few: each company had to have been profitable and have posted sales of at least $300 million during the past 12 months, have a share price of at least $5 and be covered by at least one analyst. (We also excluded basic-materials companies from our search to keep the steel industry, a major beneficiary of the weakening dollar, from dominating the results.) The top 10 companies in terms of year-to-date stock performance are on our list.

Which look poised to continue their run? Because of their relatively low price/earnings-to-growth, or PEG, ratios, four companies caught our attention: Coldwater Creek Inc., Bluegreen Corp., Navarre Corp. and DHB Industries Inc. The PEG ratio is calculated by dividing a company's price/earnings ratio by its projected long-term earnings-growth rate. That makes it useful for assessing the price of a fast-growing company's shares relative to it prospects. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index has a PEG of around 1.6 right now. Stocks with PEGs less than that can be considered less expensive than the overall market. Those with PEGs near or below 1.0, in particular, are worth a closer look.

Nice looking chart with some good indicators in a strong industry group. This one warrants a watching and some further research.

Interesting IPO to keep an eye on.

A new company to be known as the Las Vegas Sands Corp plans an IPO of about 23.8 million shares of common stock plus an underwriter's 15 percent green shoe option to purchase 3.5 million shares. That would put 27.3 million shares out, which is a small float given that friends and family will keep many of these shares off the market for years.

Las Vegas Sands owns the highly profitable Venetian mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip and a major new hotel and casino in Macau, nearby Hong Kong. Expected proceeds of about $536.8 million, at the IPO price of about $21, will be used to build a $1.6 billion, 3,000-room Palazzo mega-resort next to the Venetian.

The Palazzo is expected to open in 2007. The combined Palazzo, Venetian and Sands Expo and Convention Center would be the largest resort and hotel complex in the world, with more than 7,000 hotel rooms and suites.

At an IPO price of $21, LVS would have a market capitalization of about $6.8 billion, making it the third-largest gambling company in the world behind Harrah's Entertainment (NYSE: HET) and MGM Mirage (NYSE: MGG) if their proposed mergers are approved.

The Las Vegas Sands has already been approved for listing on the NYSE under the symbol "LVS." I expect the IPO will be hot.

I got into this today. 500 @ 6.70 late in the day 3PM or so. Earnings were good and are now out of the way. New highs above 7 should be seen soon. I wanted to do 1K shares but figured it might correct down some - so I took 1/2 an intended position just to be in if it continues to move up. Options play potential too!

BTW, got out of ALDN for a $.90 / share gain in less than 1 day of holding! Made a few hundred. Missed the top but it was coming down as fast as it spiked and I didn't want to hang on for a wild ride. In at 24.60 out at $25.50.

I took a shot on this today. In at 24.60 around 11AM or so. 400 shares. I really liked the looks of this stock, earnings are out of the way, IBD Stock Checkup ia A+. Down early, heavy volume, no news. It might be a bit risky but it seems to have stabilized at 24.50 for now. I looked at the Parabolic SAR and Bollinger Bands on Yahoo! technical analysis and figured it was going to soon break one way or the other, I went with Up! Hopefully!

Although this is an oder on the previously announced blanket order, they have announced that this in conjunction with previous unidentified orders total $3.6 million over the past 6 months.

Premarket indication is: up .40 or 5.6%. Right at the 7.50 strike price of the Nov calls I sold. I wonder if this is a start of a real sustained move up, or if earnings still has the potential to take some wind out of the sails. I am prepared to get exercised if it comes to that. I can always take a new position.

Stopped Out of PXR - Errored out of NSS

I got stopped out of PXR this AM @ 22.65 for a less than 1 point gain. I didn't like the looks of the action late yesterday and set the stop, it went off at the open.

I'm also out of NSS this AM, I was going to set a Stop on it and instead I wound up hitting the wrong button and selling it as a Limit order for 19.40. Doh! I hope this doesn't turn out to bite me in the future. But I did profit on both trades, so maybe it is good to take some profits here.

I will watch both for possible re-entry.

Well, it is yesterday's news now, but I wasn't around most of the day yesterday and didn't get to read the news until the evening, and I am just getting around to noting it on the Blog.

I am contemplating selling the $7.50 covered calls for November. This stock typically pulls back and there is the upcoming earnings announcement - however, the pace of the orders and press releases has really picked up of late. I'd hate to be short sighted for a few hundred if this thing has legs that can get it to $10 before it sees 5 again. (Of course, I hope it never looks back)

Paxar hit another 52 week high today @ 23.88 and closed just off of it at 23.82. Volume has not been that great with these new highs.

I decided to use the Big Charts Java tool instead of Yahoo on this post today.

Very glad I got out of this one when I did. This just re-emphasizes the risks. There is little one can do when their position opens down 30% from the previous day's close.

I sold at 9.40 a few days ago. Can't remember the exact date and don't want to look it up.

For the day, Monday 10/4/04 - Down 35.45% or $3.41 from previous close of 9.62 on Friday.

I like the move in NSS today. Moving with the strength in the oil stocks and crude above $50/barrel again. Volume looks like it will be greater than average today. Maybe this stock can get some attention. I don't know if it is a good thing or not, but the Yahoo message boards have been silent on this one since 9/10!
